London, England-- Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards claims the song 'Ruby Tuesday' was written about Susan Boyle, when she was just a little girl. Keith says the band was passing through Scotland in early 1966 and they stopped in a local pub. A mute, 5-year old girl wandered in from the cold, and it was Susan.
"She would never say where she came from." said Keith. "We asked her if her mum was nearby, but she didn't answer. Mick seemed alarmed by her wild look, but I took it all in stride."
"'Don't question why she needs to be so free.' I told Mick. She'll tell you it's the only way to be."
Keith also said the little girl had a bright red nose from the cold, so the band nicknamed her Ruby.
"We all just sat in this pub in Scotland with this strange, silent little girl. Eventually her mum showed up and took her away. I remember it like yesterday. It happened on a Tuesday." said the legendary guitarist.
"I remember saying: Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday, who could hang a name on you." said Keith. "Later that same night we wrote 'Ruby Tuesday', and the rest is history."
Keith said the band returned during the 1980's to the same Scottish village, and tried to find the little girl again. By that time Susan was 20, but still very timid.
"I told her we wrote the song about her, and she seemed pleased. She was still very, very shy, but told me she'd like to be a singer some day. So now you know the rest of the story."
