Lake Okeechobee, Florida (IP) - Man Vs Wild episode Number 47 is being filmed near Omakasassa Island on Lake Okeechobee. The island is famous for the giant fresh water octopus which inhabit the deep waters around the island.
It is the only location in the world where such creatures exist and few fisherman dare to frequent the area. The octopus are very aggressive and it is not unheard of for fishing boats which venture into these deep clear waters to disappear without a trace.
Indeed, one giant octopus which died and whose carcass floated south to Rita Island was dissected by scientists and they found a small 14 foot long fishing boat inside complete with its 18 horse power Mercury engine, much to their horror. The motor was found to be in perfect operating condition.
Bear Grylls, the star of Man Vs Wild coats himself with oil from a gar fish which the octopus greatly disdain and thus is he able to safely swim right over the top of the large denizens without any ill effect. The oil from the garfish also acts as a natural mosquito repellent and their flesh tastes a bit like lobster to humans.
The octopus seem to resent the garfish oil trick and woe be to those who might follow in the wake of swimmers who employ the ages old trick first invented by Indians who lived here during the archaic period. The fury of the offended octopus seems to triple after such tactics are employed and witnesses have observed the octopus approach the island and rip coconut palms completely out of the ground and then toss them up to 7 meters into the air.
Bear was able to gather coconuts for survival purposes after an enraged octopus uprooted a palm tree thanks to Bear's use of the garfish oil trick. If Bear is unable to catch another garfish before he leaves the island then it is possible that a helicopter will have to be used to whisk Bear off to a local marina where hopefully there will be vacancy available at the motel there.
