Rowling his hard at work on her new manuscript

J.K. Rowling, author of the highly successful Harry Potter series, has begun writing her first non-Harry novel. She has been spotted working on the manuscript in Edinburgh cafes and libraries. Rowling, who has dominated the best seller lists and is now one of the richest women in the world, has sold more than 335 million books about her boy wizard and his friends.

Rowling insists that her new work will be in a different genre and will not have anything to do with her famous characters. The book, a detective novel, will be set at a university and titled Larry Porter and the Scholar's Scones. In it, a college freshman and his sidekicks, a young man named Herman and his romantic interest Rennie, discover friendship and mystery in their school.

One of their mentors will be Huggard, a large, former American football lineman who also runs the university stables. They are also assisted by their faculty advisor, Professor Minny Gunderson. The University President, Doctor Humblebore, will also assist and provide guidance in their quest. Herman's older triplet sisters, a group of sorority coeds, are on hand to provide comedy relief.

Larry and his group will be opposed by Darko Hallboy, the head of a rival fraternity and the son of an influential university donor. He and his friends, Garb and Koyle, will try to stop Larry, Herman, and Rennie at every turn.

Rowling insists that this is the most original thing she has ever created and is a radical departure from her first seven novels. She does not know if people will accept her new characters and hopes that people do not try to draw parallels between them and her Harry Potter characters.
