image for Gary and the Gobshites to reform after 25 years
National Disgrace appeared on the album Couldn't Give a Toss, on the Stiff Records label

The music world was in turmoil today when news broke that punk rock recluse Gary Gritter was intending to reform his first band complete with the original line-up. Gary and the Gobshites split up in 1987 following a long-running personality clash between Gary and bassist Nigel Collins, who is credited with having written most of the group's hits.

The band, whose controversial debut single National Disgrace topped the UK chart for nine weeks, was famous for its raucous behaviour and outrageous performances. John Peel once said that Gary and the Gobshites represented the very best and the very worst of the UK's post-punk scene, but mainly the worst.

Despite occasional rumours or a reunion, today's announcement has come as something of a surprise, especially considering that the band's last known meeting in 2002 resulted in a mass brawl and a number of lawsuits. On that occasion, drummer Colonel Umlaut Mc.Afterbirth said from his hospital bed that he thought a future reunion was 'unlikely'.

Since the announcement, there has been some speculation that it could actually be nothing more than a publicity stunt to plug the recently released biography of the band, Raw and Gritty and Right Up In Your Face: The true story of Gary and the Gobshites.

One sad note however; if the band does reform, backing singer Odour Toilet, the so-called 'sixth Gobshite', is unlikely to be involved. Tragically she is still in a coma following a jet-pack accident in 2010.

Make Roy Turse's day - give this story five thumbs-up (there's no need to register, the thumbs are just down there!)

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
