"You've got to chew off that leg so you can get out of that trap," the muskrat friend said.

"I can't, I can't. Just can't do it," the muskrat that was caught said.

The other muskrat ran away, but had its leg caught in another trap further upstream. It wouldn't take its own advice and chew off its leg so it could free itself from the trap. A few hours later, its muskrat friend happened along, and finding the newly trapped muskrat brother, said, "You've got to take your own advice and free yourself from that trap. Get chewing. Chew off that leg."

"I can't, I can't. It's just too much," the other cried.

A few days passed and the freed muskrat went back to see if its friend had freed itself from the trap. Surprised to find the other muskrat still caught in the steel grips, it pleaded, "Didn't you try to chew off your leg so you could get free?"

"I've chewed off three of my legs and I'm still caught in this trap," the muskrat screamed.

"You lunkhead, you chewed off all the legs that weren't caught in the trap!"

"I did it for practice," the other muskrat explained. "When I get the nerve up, I'm going to chew off the leg that's caught."
