The Gardeners' World presenter has been criticised for his 'timid' mixed planting schemes that combine boring fruit, such as gooseberries and crab apples, with wallflowers and pansies.
Horticultural Society members have written to the BBC asking producers to encourage him to 'grasp the nettle' and be bold in his rather unassuming borders.
