Filming of George Stevens' 1965 movie about the life of Jesus was beset with problems according to a recent Hollywood memoir.
Controversial casting saw Sicilian American actor - and notorious ad libber - Robert Loggia take on the role of a slightly paranoid St Joseph.
Fellow actors feared he'd forget his lines mess up the script, adding huge re-shoot costs to the movie's budget.
Sure enough in an opening scene Loggia appeared momentarily dumbstruck when the Virgin Mary, played by Dorothy McGuire, told him she's pregnant and pointed to the Archangel Gabriel who'd just given her the news.
'But we've never even had sex together!' Loggia fumed.
'Sure looks like someone's had it in for me!'
