"I heard Jake's really down in the dumps," Philip said to his friend Charlie one afternoon.
"Really?" Charlie replied.
"What a bummer."
"We should call him and try to cheer him up," Philip suggested.
"Good idea," Charlie said as he pulled out his cell phone and dialed Jake's number.
"Hello?" Jake answered.
"Hey, Jake, it's Charlie. I'm here with Philip," Charlie said.
"Hey, Charlie! How's it going?" Jake came back. He sounded cheery.
"Not bad," Charlie replied. "I heard you were really down in the dumps," he added.
"Yeah, I am," Jake said in that same cheery voice.
Now Charlie was confused. "You sound like you're in a really good mood," Charlie said. "Almost as though you're glad to be down in the dumps!"
"I am," Jake replied. "You wouldn't believe what people are throwing away these days! So far, I've found a set of folding chairs, several books, a nice lamp."
