I have viewed several Olympic items on the news, in magazines, and in newspapers. The Union flag, a naval signal, that represents the United Kingdom, has now been stripped of its primary colour. Red. Our national emblem, according to the people in the know, is now represented in BLUE AND WHITE. Theses colours, denote the Scottish national flag. Strange that a Scottish national designed the Olympic uniform. The Sun newspaper is running a campaign where readers may collect a "British" wrist band.
The colours of this "British" item are BLACK. WHITE. BLUE.
Where do they get the idea that this is our national emblem?

Athletes wearing the Uniform of Great Britain, are dressed in blue and white, with a small red patch discreatly hidden. I am outraged, that our nation, is not being represented in its true national colours. It is a joke and proves beyond doubt, being English,Welsh or Irish no longer counts. I have written to the culture secretary and David Cameron. The national flag, is RED WHITE AND BLUE. A naval standard. Naval signal. military standard. Battlefield marker. And the standard that represents Great Britain. Why have they changed it?

A genuine grievance, no doubt. But I fear it's rather late, as they've been around for - as we used to say - yonks.

History: The current Union flag dates from 1801 although the original dates back as far as 1601 when King James 1 united England with Scotland. The design is set out in the following pattern. The red cross of St George edged in white. Superimposed on the cross of St Patrick, then together superimposed on the saltire of St Andrew.

So dear old Stella has made a big mistake, or it was a deliberate ploy to leave the English flag out of the pattern. Not one government minister has raised the subject.
Might be something to do with the 80% of Scottish parlimentarians? "And the lamb lies down"

The kit was launched in March:

http://www.teamgb.com/news/official-team-gb-olympic-kit-launched

The fact it was too blue certainly was noticed:

Interestingly, McCartney says she wanted to make it stand apart from the American and French red, white and blues.

Thank you Ellis,

How stupid can Stella be. Never in a million years would the United States of America or France change thier flags. It is an outrage against the people of this country and those that fly the Union flag. I am sick and tired of being named British. I am English and live in the United Kingdom.

My countries flag is the flag of St George. Red and White.
The national flag is the Union flag. Red White and Blue.
Great Britain no longer exists. Get over it.

I think, like Spike Milligan, I will apply for Irish citizenship, they are very short of people over there.

Your outrage is glorious.. if only you weren't four months late on the scene. Google it old son.. it was hot news in every single National paper for days. A right old mass-debate was had by all..

Akchully, whilst I agree with you on all the national issues, I like Stella's designs.. dead sexy on that heptathlete girl..

The French kits seems to be mostly blue and white, with about as much red as ours.

Can't see images for the US one - only stories that congressmen are miffed that it's being made in China!

Where's ours made?

I must have been on the moon C.J. I rarely read newspapers.
But thank you, for highlighting my ignorance. Irene, my wife, has threatened to lock me in the summer house if I do not stop banging on about it. Apologies if I have gone over old ground. Now then, what can I moan about now?

The only thing I can think of about the Union flag, and why it isn't being properly represented, is that perhaps in recent years it's become a symbol of the BNP and the EDL.

As far as I'm concerned, the flag is valid, and representative of Great Britain, and as such should be respected and displayed with pride.

It's about time the people reclaimed it from these right wing nutters and restored it to its former glory. It represents a whole multi-cultural society, not a few xenophobic oddballs.

Maybe one of the PC brigade got cold feet about using it.

Just my thoughts.

Regards

Skoob.

Your opinion is proberly spot on SKOOB. The so called "PC" Brigade have not a clue about culture or integration. They offend the people they claim to protect.

There have been moves to reclaim the flag from the extreme right - not least by Billy Bragg:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/bnp/7622405/Being-patriotic-doesnt-make-you-a-fascist.html

And a critical approach...

The UK flag was used very well in the closing event over the weekend.
