I still think it's the best thing George Formby ever wrote.

It was a mistake trying to play it on the ukelele, however.

He should have listened to Franz Kafka, and left it as a threnody for washboard and coal scuttle.

George Formby and Franz Kafka used to play the clubs together, in Blackpool, in the early days. George on the ukelele, and Franz on the jew's harp and euphonium.

What split them up was when George started to get these dark ideas about society. Kafka finally fkced off back to Europe after a particularly strained matinee, when George refused the custard pie in the face.

Some people see Kafka's fiction as an elaborate allegory written in an attempt to exorcise the ghosts of this quarrel.

But they are a load of pretentious twats.

Chrissie Hynde - you can't get much more pretentious than being a Pretender.

Didn't Formby perform 'Get down and get with it in Paris and London'?

Your thinking of George Forman Church. Beat Chrissy Hinds in the fourth, or was it the fifth? Anyway, 1984 was a good year for the grape, and Cheddar cheese.

I head that Formby narrowly missed a knighthood but he died. Beforehand he was on the road to being a Wigan Peer.

Aldous Huxley wrote A Brave New Word - it was something like 'archegonia' - anyway Formby was so impressed he wrote a homage to it.
