Former world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier passed away earlier this day. I remember as a kid his monumental clashes with Muhammad Ali, and George Foreman, among others.
I know there aren't many fight fans out there in Spoofland, but Joe had the heart of three lions, and he was a great fighter. A son of the City Of Brotherly Love, I do believe, and quite a talented musician/singer to boot. RIP Joe - a Tyson from another era, but one who never lost his dignity. Respectfully Skoob. |

Did a snippet on Joe yesterday before he left us. Great shame, he was a real character and there's not many of them around these days.
Kept me up for hours in my younger days, couldn't wait for him and Ali. I wouldn't stay up for any boxer these days. Great boxer, great man, will be sadly missed, RIP |

Skoob,
I was a big Smokin Joe fan and watched his fights with Ali on closed circuit. Believe me, it was a big deal back then and the fight atmosphere, even on closed circuit was electric for those fights. Being a fight fan, I was at the Ali-Ken Norton fight in San Diego when Norton beat Ali. I also got to see Joe Louis fight an exhibition before a wrestling match, which was sort of sad to see him at that stage of his career. I believe it was sometime in the late 50's. Best, Dr. B |

Well said Skoob.
In complete agreement with your comments. Jaggedone: I too looked forward to and enjoyed his fights, especially with Ali! |

Lordy Lordy!
And here was me thinking I was the only fight fan. I remember watching Smokin' Joe against Foreman in Kingston, Jamaica. They didn't call George Foreman 'Killer George' for nothing. He was way bigger than Joe (As was Ali) and he put him down five or six times in one round, and despite the most bone crunching punishment, the man still got up and wanted to fight. There's a lesson in there somewhere. They should take that stupid Sylvester Stallone statue down off them steps in Philadelphia and replace it with one of Smokin' Joe. Maybe we should start a movement. Sincerely Skoob. |

How do you stay on your feet with big Joe knocking the tar out of your moosh? He was a giant in the boxing world, a legend. Did well for a man from the poorest start in life any person could have had. And he beat Ali, both in the ring and out of it.
Rest in Peace Joe Arm xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |

Don't believe he ever forgave Ali for all the taunts, did he?

Those taunts were famous and he never let up. I remember him best in the Parkinson interviews.
I think the best were: Joe Frazier is so ugly that when he cries, the tears turn around and go down the back of his head. Frazier is so ugly that he should donate his face to the US Bureau of Wildlife. But I believe a lot of the time they were friends and shared mutual respect which was shown by Ali's comments yesterday.

There is a growing suspicion that Smoking Joe was battered to death .
The police are grilling George Foreman about it. |

Was a big boxing fan in the '60's and '70's. Smokin' Joe was as tough as they come and took some almighty batterings as well as handing them out.
I still remember, as a pre-teen, entering into my 'Adrian Mole' diary a prediction on the Clay v Liston fight that Cassius was going to get smashed into oblivion by the thuggish mincing machine that was Sonny Liston (having seen him previously demolish the classy Floyd Patterson in one round). How wrong I was... |

"Smokin' Joe" is actually a misnomer.
Frazier never touched cigarettes. |
