So, AV vote tomorrow.

I haven't had anything through my letterbox from the Yes to AV people. I guess they're not targeting us up north. Their website seems to be pandering more to southern toffs with their coffee and fancy bars. Wehheehooheehoo.

Anyway, had two pieces of junk from the No to AV people. Which got me so ticked off that I think that perhaps it did come from the Yes to AV people.

I'm voting Yes to AV because @stephenfry told me to.

Why are you voting Yes to AV?

Heh, loaded question, I love it.

Just out of interest, I thought I'd put a poll out here, just to find out how you're going to vote tomorrow on AV.

(BTW AV stands for Alternative Vote. Don't get confused that it's something to do with the leads coming out of your video recorder. I think that would be a good joke for the No to AV people to use.)

Q: No yanks, limeys only
Yes
44%
No
55%

I've just said yes to AV but the poll makes it look as if I've said "No" to Americans. Ha Ha.

And I'm keeping a low profile for a while!

I'm a 'Limey' but haven't a clue what you are talking about.

I know what an ATV is (All Terrain Vehicle)

I know that an RV is a recreational vehicle.

Don't anyone tell me I am being 'trivial'. I have been keeping an eye on some of the strange Discussions you've been having whilst I was on vacation. LOL etc. etc.

What IS an Alternative Vote? If you don't vote for a candidate...what IS the Alternative? Don't vote? Seriously...I'm confused.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Instant-runoff voting (IRV), also known as the alternative vote (AV), is a voting system used to elect one winner from a pool of candidates using preferential voting. Voters rank candidates in order of preference, and their votes are initially allocated to their first choice candidate. If after this initial count no candidate has a majority of votes cast, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and votes for that candidate are redistributed according to the voters' second preferences. This process continues until one candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, upon which they are declared the winner.

Saves money on having a run-off election.

The biggest problem that I personally see with AV is that it may put a lot of people off voting altogether.

Another problem being that it will probably result in endless recounts.

Ahem. *cough* cough*. say what?

I would vote for AV, but can't because I'm a criminal and mentally insane. I would like PR - everyone would like PR - but at least AV is better than FPTP.

AV is a stepping stone to getting PR.

It is better to have two slices of fresh bread, than a whole loaf of mouldy bread.

FPTP was made for dual-party countries, like the US. We have a 2.5 party system, so it doesn't really work.

Also, the fact of the matter is, Australia have nearly the same institutions and party-styles and other things as Britain, and they've had LESS coalition govts than we have.

The NO Camp might say that "AV is used in a few countries", well, there are over 80 different styles of electoral voting. The rest of the world use different styles, which is why the NO Camp say so.

However, both sides Yes and No, think that voters are idiots.

It'll be actually cheaper to hold the referendum, mostly because there are local elections on - excluding the boroughs of Loserdon - in most places.

If you think about, if 40% vote Labour and 20% vote Cons. 5% vote Lib Dem and the rest goes to other parties, Labour would win under FPTP. Yet, Labour are not representing the views of 60% of a constituency. If we had AV, then Labour - or indeed any party - would need more that 50% to be successful, therefore meaning that most views are represented.

The cost of voting under the new system would be minimal. No fancy machines would be needed. All that would cost more is probably more pencils or more ballot paper and time, effectively.

In fact, if the nation says NO, then it will signal to future governments that we don't want electoral reform, so we'll get no PR nonetheless.

In the Economist it said vote NO, so this has taken a lot of conviction on my part to say YES.

Also, I get the Indy if some jackass has taken the last Guardian from my local corner shop.

"Sometimes the best intentions end up intense without means to quell it.
We've poisoned our blood streams and blackened our lungs. We've enabled the edifice that it's how we belong.
We may suffer together, but we all die alone.
We may suffer together, but we all die alone.
We may suffer together, but we all die alone.
We may suffer together, but we all die alone."
