David Tennant's doctor did regenerate as himself. Hmm. And, according to the Internet, his contract is good through 2010, which will include 4 specials and one more full season.
Evidently he is doing a play which will limit his series schedule time. Is he the best doctor? Considering the fact that this regineration of the series has the best budget (and therefore writing and effects) Tennant and Eccleston with both have an advantage over the earlier doctors, many of whom had little personality or character development. No, I admit, I have not gone back to watch every episode, but those I have watched have never seem to be as sophisticated or witty as the scripts in this series. This alone would limit the range an actor could bring to a character. Tennant or Eccleston? Eccleston's character never had the wit of Tennant's, but even his interpretation was more in keeping with the earlier doctors (he was always a bit of a moralizer who took things just a bit too seriously). Tennant's doctor is flippant, witty and still menacing when he needs to be. And he has better hair.

Yes, I'll give you that, he has better hair.
But he loses out on every other point, particularly the slurred cockney. |
